A journey through Oman between ocean, mountains and desert begins in Muscat, where forts, mosques and incense-scented souqs reveal the meeting point of tradition and modernity. Leaving the capital behind, the landscape changes quickly: canyons, oases and villages lead south toward the Dhofar region, along the ancient incense trade routes.
Then the desert unfolds: the Rub’ al Khali, the legendary Empty Quarter, where immense dunes and absolute silence shape an authentic expedition experience, with mobile camps beneath star-filled skies and horizons that seem to stretch on forever.

Day by Day
The Incense Route and the Red Dunes
Meet at 8:00 AM at the hotel and depart by 4×4 vehicles heading northeast. We travel through the Dhofar Governorate, a region touched by the monsoons and known since ancient times—along with neighboring Yemen—as Arabia Felix. As the land of Frankincense, this was the starting point for the legendary caravans that traversed the Arabian Peninsula toward the Mediterranean, following the historic Incense Route.
After lunch at a local restaurant, we take the first off-road tracks toward the red dunes of the Rub’ Al Khali, the Great Desert of the Arabian Peninsula. While it lies mostly within Saudi Arabia, its most spectacular scenery is found here in Oman. After scouting the perfect location, we will set up our mobile camp, our home for the next few days.
Enjoy dinner under the stars followed by an overnight stay at the camp.

Into the Heart of the Desert
After breakfast and a morning walk, we venture deeper into the heart of the Rub’ Al Khali. The landscape is dominated by star dunes—massive sandy ridges that shift in all directions with the winds, ranging in color from pale yellow to deep red. These towering dunes are often separated by flat, white basins, the remnants of an ancient seabed.
This striking contrast is a paradise for photography, especially during the “golden hour” before sunset. As we navigate the terrain, vehicles may occasionally get stuck in the sand; in these moments, active collaboration from participants is part of the adventure. The sense of isolation, the primordial environment, and the ever-changing shapes of the dunes make these days truly unforgettable.

Rub' Al Khali
The Rub’ al Khali, the legendary Empty Quarter, is one of the largest and most spectacular sand deserts on the planet: an ocean of dunes stretching for hundreds of kilometers across Saudi Arabia, Oman, the United Arab Emirates, and Yemen. Here the landscape is pure and primordial, shaped by absolute silence, monumental dunes, and endless horizons that transform every crossing into a true expedition experience.
