Rub’ al Khali
We will leave the paved road behind for good as we venture into the Rub Al Khali desert.
As we progress, the desert changes, evoking a crescendo of emotions. The dunes, initially small, pale, and dotted with trees and shrubs, gradually become taller and more spectacular, while the sand deepens into an ever-changing array of reds. Vast white, chalky plains, remnants of ancient seas, separate the long dune ridges, where we will climb with our vehicles, searching for paths that will challenge both the vehicles and the travellers but will create unforgettable memories.
02 - 03 - 04 - 05
Rub al Khali – Ubar – Wadi Dawka – Salalah
In the morning, we leave the desert to arrive by late morning at the archaeological site of Ubar (now Shisr), the “Atlantis of the desert,” discovered only recently through satellite images. This site was a famous stopover on caravan routes. Lunch at a restaurant. We will then stop at Wadi Dawka, where you can see the frankincense trees that have made the Dhofar region famous. Dinner and overnight stay in a hotel.
06
Taqa – Khor Rori – Al Baleed – Souk
In the morning, we head east, crossing Salalah, where residential areas and plantations blend together, giving the city a unique atmosphere. The climate is mild for several months of the year. The beautiful beach of Taqa, where the sea displays colours ranging from emerald green to deep blue, is often a spot where dolphins and turtles can be seen swimming close to the shore. We then arrive at the famous archaeological site of Khor Rori, also known as Sumhuram, where the Queen of Sheba is said to have lived for a period. The ancient city, discovered and brought to light by an Italian archaeological expedition, was also known to the Romans as Abyssopolis. This was a crucial route connecting India and the East with Africa and Europe. We return to Salalah. Lunch at a restaurant, followed by an afternoon visit to Al Baleed, an archaeological site, and the attached Museum of Frankincense. In the afternoon, we explore the souk, where we will encounter the vibrant colours and fragrances of various types of incense. Return to the hotel for dinner and overnight stay.
07
Salalah –Wadi Salafan
In the morning, we return to the souk to visit the market of the Balushi people, the mountain inhabitants—an ancient and proud people who supported the Sultan when he came to power. They were honoured and recognized for their loyalty. In the mornings, they gather to talk and sell what they possess, ranging from rifles and knives to some local handicrafts. Following this, we visit the fish market. Leaving Salalah, we head into the Jebel Samhan, a mountain range cut through by deep wadis. From here, we begin the descent into Wadi Salafan, where the track becomes less distinct until it disappears at the bottom of the wadi, amidst a spectacular contrast of shapes and colours. We will set up camp and stay overnight in the wadi.
08
Wadi Salafan – Shuwamiyah
In the morning, we continue our journey, leaving the winding wadi and finding ourselves on a plain where various types of acacia plants grow abundantly. We then head towards the coast until we reach Shuwamiyah. The coastline here is characterized by limestone cliffs of various colours, ranging from white to yellow. We will set up camp and stay overnight in a canyon.
